Richard Wagner (1813–1883) was a German composer who profoundly shaped the course of European opera and music. He is the creator of the monumental four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, of which Siegfried is the third part. Wagner championed the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk — a total work of art uniting music, poetry, and drama.
