Journey Through Bedřich Smetana's Family Tree
Národní muzeum, Prague
An exhibition at the Bedřich Smetana Memorial explores genealogical research connected to the composer's life. Through family photographs and engaging iconography, visitors gain insight into the history of Smetana's two marriages. The exhibition's foundation consists of two illustrated genealogical trees documenting 117 people across 8 generations. The visual design is the work of graphic designer Jana Koksteinová.
The exhibition traces the fates of Smetana's daughters from both marriages: from his first marriage to Kateřina Kolářová, only Žofie survived to adulthood, marrying forester Josef Schwarze in 1874; Smetana spent the last 10 years of his life with them. From his second marriage to Bettina Ferdinandiová, daughters Zdenka and Božena were born. Photographs come from the Bedřich Smetana Museum collection and from living descendants of the composer. The exhibition is complemented by curious objects loaned by Smetana's descendants.
Guidance tours of the Bedřich Smetana Memorial are available only with a guide and begin on every hour, with the last tour starting at 16:00.
