Lidové divadlo Svitavy occupies a building that originally housed the Elysium cinema. After World War II it became the city-owned Stalingrad cinema, and in 1947 the city leased it to a newly formed amateur theatre ensemble. That ensemble was established in 1946 by merging local theatre groups, opening with František Langer's play Velbloud uchem jehly. Today the hall hosts theatre performances, concerts and other cultural events.
