J. R. R. Tolkien (1892–1973) was a British author, philologist, and Oxford University professor. He is best known for creating the fantasy world of Middle-earth and writing The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, works that profoundly shaped modern fantasy literature. Tolkien was also a scholar of Old English and Norse languages, and invented several constructed languages for his fictional world.
