Bedřich Smetana (1824–1884) was the foremost Czech composer of the 19th century and a founding figure of Czech national music. Born in Litomyšl, he is best known for the symphonic cycle Má vlast and the opera The Bartered Bride, both cornerstones of the Czech musical repertoire.
