Katatonia are a Swedish metal band founded in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. Starting out in death/doom, they gradually shifted toward gothic and progressive rock, building one of the most distinctive sounds in dark metal. Over more than three decades they have released thirteen studio albums, from the cult classic Brave Murder Day (1996) to their 2025 record Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State.
Katatonia released on June 6, 2025 their thirteenth studio album Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State on the Napalm Records label.
The band announced an extensive autumn European tour 2025 with guests Evergrey and Klogr, which covers 31 cities and starts on November 11 in Tampere.
Co-founder and guitarist Anders Nyström left the band due to creative disagreements regarding the band's musical direction.
Katatonia announced their own headlining tour of North America in February 2026, following joint tours with Opeth.
As the second single from the new album, the band released the song Temporal accompanied by a lyric video on streaming platforms.
