Francis Poulenc (1899–1963) was a French composer and pianist, member of the group Les Six. He wrote songs, chamber music, and choral works, but is perhaps best known for his opera Dialogues des Carmélites (1957), a powerful work depicting the fate of Carmelite nuns executed during the French Revolution.
