About

David Dorůžka (born 1980, Prague) is a Czech jazz guitarist and composer who has been performing professionally since the age of fourteen. He studied composition and improvisation at Berklee College of Music in Boston under Joe Lovano, Mick Goodrick and George Garzone; in 2000 Pat Metheny selected him as the sole guitarist for the prestigious Aspen Snowmass Jazz Colony. He has won three Anděl Awards for Jazz Album of the Year (Hidden Paths 2004, Silently Dawning 2008, Autumn Tales 2016) and has collaborated with musicians including Jeff Ballard, Lizz Wright, Arild Andersen and Django Bates. His grandfather was the noted Czech jazz historian Lubomír Dorůžka.

    Dorůžka released a duet album How Little We Dream (Bivak Records) with singer Marta Kloučková, which offers an original arrangement of compositions by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon and Billie Eilish.

    As a preview of the new album, the duo released a music video with an arrangement of the song Wildflower by Billie Eilish.

    The album When the Child Was a Child was released, recorded in Warsaw in September 2024 with Polish musicians Piotr Wyleżół, Michał Barański and Michał Miśkiewicz; it was released on CD on February 21, 2025.

    In March 2025, Dorůžka spoke in an interview for Český rozhlas Jazz about collaboration with Polish musicians and about a tour with Dutch saxophonist Tineke Postma.

    The Headliner editorial board included the album Gilgul (2023) in its selection of the best Czech albums of 2024 and praised Dorůžka's arrangement of Jewish music traditions.
