Žerotín Castle

Valašské Meziříčí

About the venue

Žerotín Castle is a Renaissance building begun by Jan of Pernštejn in the late 1530s and completed by the Žerotín family around 1548. A Baroque remodelling in the 18th century gave it the current U-shaped layout with a clock tower. Between 1854 and 1909 it served as a women's prison - the only one in Moravia and Silesia - and has been city property since 1945. Today it houses the municipal Cultural Centre, a theatre hall, the M-klub in the vaulted cellar, and the Museum and Gallery Centre, open since 2014, with period rooms and a Baroque chapel frescoed by Josef Ignác Sadler.
