Forrest Gump is Zemeckis's film that convinces with comedic gags and an urgently pathetic tone. Its hero is the simple Forrest, who from childhood did what he was told, and took one proven rule through life: when you get into trouble, run. He flows through school, university, and the hell of the Vietnam War – there is always someone or something that throws stones at him, literally or figuratively.
Forrest's life journey from the 1950s to the 1980s is told as an "artless" testimony of a hero incapable of broader evaluation of situations. He meets famous personalities, who are eventually always shot by someone (J. F. Kennedy, J. Lennon), while he himself remains. Empirically, he progresses from impulsive escape from life to reflections on human fate and God. The private hero's story simultaneously captures thirty years of post-war American history.
