Clown(s)

Divadlo Antonína Dvořáka, Ostrava

Opera in seven scenes, 2024–25

The opera "Clown(s)" by composer Anya Sokolović draws inspiration from Maurice Sand's book Masques et bouffons (Masks and Jesters) and Federico Fellini's film I clowns (Clowns). Like the early operatic form favola in musica, the composition traces a clown's life journey through a full spectrum of emotions—from joy and love to fear, anger, and sorrow.

The work combines puppets, shadows, acrobatics, and Balkan rhythms with cinematic techniques referencing the work of Fellini, Keaton, Chaplin, Tati, Robin Williams, and Jerry Lewis. The opera is dedicated to Marielle Pandolfi, whose consultations helped the composer complete the work.
