Church of St. Michael

Znojmo

About the venue

The Roman Catholic church of St. Michael stands on Jezuitské náměstí in Znojmo, close to the old town walls. The Romanesque building probably dates to the 12th century and was raised on the site of a pagan cult place; it was reshaped several times between the 15th and 17th centuries. The chancel features a remarkable star-ribbed vault, while the high altar carries a painting by Karel Dankwart from the 1690s. The bell tower stands apart from the church - its predecessors collapsed in 1581 and 1642, and the current one was only finished in 1852. The church has been a listed cultural monument since 1973.
