Bohemia After Dark

Jazz Dock, Prague

from 300 Kč · ≈ 12 €

Prague's international bebop ensemble Bohemia After Dark was founded in February 2019 and focuses on authentically swinging arrangements of classic recordings and lesser-known gems from the golden age of bebop – from the 1940s through the emergence of hard bop in the mid-1950s.

The project is inspired by the life paths of two bebop pioneers: drummer Kenny Clark (1914–1985) and bassist Oscar Pettiford (1922–1960). The name references Pettiford's composition "Bohemia After Dark" and Clark's album of the same name (Savoy, 1955), released shortly after the opening of New York's Café Bohemia and which launched the career of Cannonball Adderley.

The project's repertoire includes compositions associated with figures such as Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro, Tadd Dameron, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, J. J. Johnson, James Moody, Gigi Gryce and John Lewis, as well as vocalists Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae and Annie Ross.
