A dark vision of life in a multicultural Parisian suburb where long-standing problems have turned the streets into a near war zone. Director and screenwriter Mathieu Kassovitz follows the story of three young friends - a Jew, an African, and an Arab - and through them reveals the deadlock of Parisian suburban housing estates.
Frustration and anger at marginalization simmer in the central trio until they erupt in a chilling and provocative finale. Kassovitz's work combines rawness and bluntness with striking style and empathy, which is why it is considered a landmark of modern French cinema.
