Kyōgen Theatre is a professional ensemble dedicated since 2001 to the creative translation and performance of Japanese kyōgen comedies in Czech. It is the only European ensemble that systematically practices this genre in its native language. The ensemble was founded at the initiative of Hubert Krejčí, a Pardubice-born playwright, director and mime, together with Japanologist Ondřej Hýbl and Okura Shigeyama Shime, a master of the traditional Kyoto school of kyōgen.
Kyōgen (meaning "mad words" or "artfully embellished words") is a comic theatrical form that developed, like nō theatre, from originally Chinese sarugaku plays. It flourished in the mid-14th century and continues in an unbroken tradition to this day; the genre is inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage.
The programme features three farces from the ensemble's repertoire: Susugigawa, Kagyu and Fukuro.
