Dear Bereaved — Futureum, Ostrava

A black comedy about dying family grievances between canapés and a coffin.

Organizing a funeral is no simple task - it's a complex managerial undertaking, especially when death is sudden and family relationships are lukewarm.

The production "Dear Bereaved" is an existential grotesque about family, death, and the awkwardness of funerals. The play captures a gathering of the bereaved at the final farewell to Mrs. Míla - or perhaps to death itself. What begins as a civil ceremony quickly transforms into an absurd carnival of family grievances and long-unspoken recriminations, complete with unsweetened tea, lemonade, and eco-friendly burial practices.

Audience members become part of the funeral gathering: they watch a family unable to hide its wounds and are drawn into a play on the boundary between life and death, awkwardness and emotion. A theatrical image emerges in which civil reality, dream, and memory intertwine, and grotesque becomes a means of uncovering the most intimate questions about family, guilt, and reconciliation.

After the performance comes a shared funeral feast, or kar.
