We'll Divide Today

Vila Tugendhat, Brno

Two years have passed since November 1989, and debates over the new shape of the state are reaching their peak. What initially seemed like a revision of mutual relations suddenly threatens a final break. A dialogue between Czech Prime Minister Václav Klaus and Slovak Premier Vladimír Mečiar at the time brings together a clash of two contradictory, yet in some ways similar men.

The programme raises questions: to what extent was the dissolution of Czechoslovakia determined by the different histories of the two nations? What were we willing to do so that the other side would also want to continue living in a shared state? And did the collapse of the republic not stem primarily from the egos of both central politicians?

Viewers will see how the decision to divide the state was made, right in Villa Tugendhat, with which it is inextricably linked. The programme is created in collaboration with the Brno City Museum and Villa Tugendhat.
