Karel Láník, a Forgotten Brno Architect of the 20th Century — House of Arts Brno, Brno

Karel Láník (1886-1956) is among the overlooked figures of Brno's architectural heritage. A native of Kunštát, he studied at the Czech Technical University in Brno under Professor Karel Hugo Kepka, and later spent many years working in Brno's municipal building office alongside prominent representatives of the city's interwar architecture.

As an architect, designer, and construction supervisor, he contributed to the creation of numerous buildings - primarily residential houses built by construction and housing cooperatives. His work captures the everyday reality of residential construction in rapidly expanding suburbs: while maintaining traditional architectural forms, he simultaneously engaged with contemporary stylistic trends and building techniques. His output exemplifies traditional interwar architecture, distant from modernist avant-garde movements.

The lecture by art historian Pavla Cenková is part of the cycle "Faces of Brno Architecture", organized by the House of Art of the City of Brno as part of the Brno Architectural Manual programme.
