From the night she laid the bricks and mortar, the mother knew the shadows had crept into her too. She no longer heard them only behind curtains or doors, but in her own chest, deep inside. When she pressed her ear to my belly, she heard them in me as well. She knew they would grow in us, that they would burrow into our insides and we would never be able to tear them out.
In her novel Woodworm, Layla Martínez shows how hatred grows within a person. From the depths of a house eaten away by woodworm, two female voices cry out, yearning to break the cycle of poverty, violence, and exploitation.
