Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) was a British novelist and essayist, one of the foremost figures of modernist literature. She is celebrated for her stream-of-consciousness technique in works such as Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse. Her novel Orlando (1928) is a playful biographical fantasy inspired by her friend Vita Sackville-West.
