Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) was a German-language poet born in Prague. He is considered one of the most significant lyric poets of modern European literature. His best-known works include the Duino Elegies and the Sonnets to Orpheus. Although he spent most of his life outside Bohemia, Prague shaped his early years and left a lasting mark on his writing.
