About

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an English playwright, poet, and actor born in Stratford-upon-Avon. He wrote approximately 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and two long narrative poems; his works have been translated into over 100 languages and are performed more frequently than those of any other playwright. He co-founded the Globe Theatre in 1599 and served as house playwright for the Lord Chamberlain's Men. His influence on world literature and the English language remains unmatched.
