Samuel Beckett (1906–1989) was an Irish playwright, novelist and poet, one of the central figures of absurdist theatre and literary modernism. He is best known for the play Waiting for Godot and prose works such as Molloy and The Unnamable. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969. His novella Company (1980) explores solitude, memory and the fragmentation of identity.
