The Flaming Lips are an American psychedelic rock band from Oklahoma, active since 1983. They broke through to wider audiences with The Soft Bulletin (1999) and the Grammy-winning Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002). Frontman Wayne Coyne - the sole remaining founding member - is the driving force behind their famously theatrical live shows, complete with confetti cannons, giant balloons and video projections. Across 17 albums they have carved out a singular place in alternative rock.
The band expanded its 2026 world tour with new performances - adding concerts in Houston, Athens, Nottingham and Glasgow for the period from May to July.
Steven Drozd, guitarist and co-founder of the band's sound, publicly confirmed his departure in January 2026 after 33 years - citing a personal crisis and unwillingness to continue touring as reasons.
Drozd initially accidentally revealed his departure in a now-deleted post on Threads in December 2025; the band and Wayne Coyne did not publicly comment on the matter.
On the 2025 tour, Drozd was replaced by guitarist AJ Slaughter, who was recommended to the band by multi-instrumentalist Derek Brown and manager Scott Booker.
The band performed at the MEO Kalorama festival in Lisbon in June 2025, confirming an active European presence even after personnel changes.
