Sonic Youth is an American rock band from New York City, active since 1981. They became known for blending noise rock, alternative rock, and avant-garde experimentation, and were highly influential on the independent music scene of the 1980s and 90s. Their landmark album Daydream Nation (1988) is widely regarded as a classic. Guitarist Lee Ranaldo is one of the band's founding members.
