The Bad Plus (USA)
American jazz quartet The Bad Plus in expanded form with guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist Chris Speed. Their music blends avant-garde jazz, alternative rock, and contemporary classical.
The Bad Plus is an American jazz group from Minneapolis, formed in 2000. Originally a piano trio - bassist Reid Anderson, drummer Dave King, and pianist Ethan Iverson - the band made its name by treating rock and pop songs (Nirvana, Black Sabbath, Aphex Twin, David Bowie) as serious jazz material alongside its own compositions. In 2021 the group reinvented itself as a piano-less quartet with guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist Chris Speed. In January 2026, Anderson and King announced that 2026 would be the band's final year.
Reid Anderson and Dave King announced on social media on January 12, 2026, that The Bad Plus would disband by the end of the year.
In March and April 2026, Anderson and King performed a special tour with pianist Craig Taborn and saxophonist Chris Potter as a tribute to Keith Jarrett.
The band expanded the farewell tour with new American and Canadian dates, including performances in New York City, Washington D.C., and Montreal.
Fall stops in Tulsa, Texas, New Mexico, Phoenix, and Irvine were added to the existing dates, with the tour continuing in October in Chicago and Nashville.
In November 2024, The Bad Plus released the album Complex Emotions on Mack Avenue Records - the second album with Monder and Speed.
