Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937) was a philosopher, sociologist and politician who became the first president of Czechoslovakia when the republic was founded in 1918. He was elected to the office four times in total, resigning in 1935 for health reasons. Born in Hodonín and raised in southern Moravia, he is remembered as the founder of the modern Czechoslovak state and is often called the "President Liberator".
