About

Matyáš Bernard Braun (1684-1738) was a Tyrolean-born sculptor and carver who settled in Bohemia around 1708 and became the leading figure of High Baroque sculpture there. He is best known for the group of Saint Luitgard's Dream on Charles Bridge, the outdoor gallery of Virtues and Vices at Kuks Hospital, and the rock-carved Bethlehem in Nový les - works that rank among the finest Baroque sculpture in Central Europe. His Prague workshop, the largest in the city, produced hundreds of pieces still found in churches, palaces and gardens across Bohemia.
