Juraj Jánošík (1688–1713) was a Slovak outlaw who became a folk hero and symbol of resistance against the ruling classes. According to popular tradition, he robbed the rich and helped the poor. He was captured and executed in Liptovský Mikuláš. His figure has inspired numerous literary, film, and theatrical works.
