David Oistrakh was a Soviet violinist of Ukrainian origin, widely regarded as one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. He was celebrated for his exceptionally singing tone and flawless technique. He collaborated with leading conductors and composers, including Dmitri Shostakovich, who dedicated his Violin Concerto No. 1 to him. Among his pupils was Czech violinist Václav Hudeček.
