Litomyšl

About the venue

Litomyšl Castle is a Renaissance arcade palace built between 1568 and 1581 by Vratislav II of Pernštejn for his wife Maria Manrique de Lara. Its facades are covered in distinctive sgraffito decoration, while the interiors gained baroque and classicist additions in the 17th and 18th centuries. A remarkable highlight is the preserved family theatre from 1797, complete with its original stage machinery and sets. The castle was the birthplace of Bedřich Smetana, and the Smetanova Litomyšl festival has been held here since 1949. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.
