Church of St. Martin in the Wall

Prague

About the venue

Gothic church with a Romanesque core in Prague's Old Town, built between 1178 and 1187. Its name comes from the fact that its south wall once adjoined the medieval city fortifications. In 1414, Jakoubek of Stříbro administered communion in both kinds here for the first time in Prague - a pivotal moment of the Czech Reformation. Closed by Emperor Joseph II in 1784 and used as a warehouse for decades, the building was bought back by the city and restored in 1905-1906 to designs by Kamil Hilbert. Today it belongs to the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren and hosts services, classical music concerts and exhibitions.
