The worldly barber Svyryd Holokkhvostyy does not lack ambition or self-confidence, but he suffers from a chronic shortage of money. He sees a solution in an advantageous marriage to the "European-educated" Pronya Prokopivna and her rich dowry. His heart, however, beats for the modest and charming Halya. Mix-ups, pretense, and comic situations gradually develop an absurd love triangle, whose resolution is followed by the entire Kyiv Podil neighborhood and the neighboring Kozhumyaky.
