Kopytem sem, kopytem tam

The protagonists of Věra Chytilová's biting group portrait are financially secure thirty-somethings who spend their time drinking, joking around, and pursuing emotionally uncommitted sexual adventures. Controller Pepe (Tomáš Hanák), veterinarian Dědek (Milan Šteindler), and manager František (David Vávra) enjoy life to the fullest - until the boisterous Pepe collapses and ends up in hospital. It emerges that one member of the group is HIV-positive, and the previously carefree promiscuity transforms into paranoid dissolution of their friendships.

Chytilová condemns the moral decay of the late 1980s and the incompatible relationships between men and women - one of her key themes. Her targets are both the rigid official structures and the new, ostentatiously nonconformist generation struggling with boredom, alienation, and spiritual emptiness. For the film, Chytilová collaborated with members of Prague's Sklep theatre, who brought elements of their distinctive poetics to the story.
