Strašnice Art Deco: The Garden City Phenomenon — Kostel Neposkvrněného početí Panny Marie, Prague

A guided walk through Strašnice traces the transformation of the neighbourhood from an agricultural village to a villa quarter at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The tour begins at the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary by Jindřich Synk - examining its architectural style and interior - and continues into the surrounding area.

The route includes Masaryk Colony, the only joint project of Josef Gočár and Pavel Janák, the Rondocubist Freedom Colony of the Svépomoc cooperative by František Albert Libra, and the Locomotive Drivers' Colony by Václav Gail and Alois Šťastný. Using these ensembles as examples, we will explore how garden cities functioned and how similar villa developments were created.

Guide: Stanislava Micková. Duration: 1.5-2 hours.
