Emil Viklický - Pavel Hrubý DUO

A chamber duo of pianist and composer Emil Viklický with bass clarinetist Pavel Hrubý.

Although both musicians had known each other personally for some time, they first came together for a joint recording in 2020 - the result was the chamber-oriented, partly fully improvised album Between Us in an unusual instrumentation of piano and bass clarinet. Following its release and positive critical reception, they decided to bring the duo to concert stages.

Emil Viklický (born 1948) combines styles in his music ranging from early jazz to modern jazz at the boundary with contemporary classical music, with his enduring theme being the fusion of Moravian folk with jazz. He has collaborated with Bill Frisell, George Mraz, Miroslav Vitous, Karel Velebný, Erik Marienthal, Zuzana Lapčíková, Iva Bittová, and Jiří Pavlica, the leader of Hradišťan. He is the author of three operas and numerous compositions for film and television.

Pavel Hrubý (born 1970) is among the most distinctive contemporary Czech jazz instrumentalists. He is known from the group Limbo and the trio Tellemarkk; in 2021 he released the solo album Go Between, on which he presents himself as an improviser and virtuoso on various types of saxophone and clarinets. In his compositions he combines jazz, blues, classical music, and Moravian folk traditions.
