Hayao Miyazaki reimagines The Little Mermaid as a contemporary tale of a young boy's encounter with a spirited creature from the underwater realm. The result is his most liberated and playful film to date - an adventure deliberately freed from the constraints of rationality.

While Western animated films increasingly rely on 3D computer animation, Studio Ghibli demonstrates that traditional "flat" animation, in the right hands, achieves a dimension noticeably absent from Euro-American productions.

The film received enthusiastic responses from audiences of all ages worldwide, screened successfully in numerous countries and at dozens of film festivals, and won two awards at the Venice Film Festival.
