Alone by the Forest

Oldřich and Věra Lavička set out with their children Petřík and Zuzanka to a cottage belonging to their acquaintance, engineer Radim Zvon, in Loukov. They want to buy their own cottage and hope Zvon will help them. Soon they spot a cottage belonging to old Komárek, who agrees to sell and rents them a room in the meantime.

While Oldřich sees the country stay as beneficial to his health and the children quickly bond with the kind-hearted old man, Věra grows increasingly agitated. She keeps pressing her husband to talk to Komárek about the sale - the old man simply gets in her way. Oldřich therefore invites his doctor friend Houdek for the weekend, who examines the grandfather and finds him in perfect health. When he also meets the old man's ancient father, Oldřich realizes that hopes for a quick sale are slim.

In winter the grandfather does fall ill and Houdek sends him to hospital against his wishes. When the whole family travels to the village with a notary to finally close the sale, they find the grandfather at home - healthy and spry as ever.
