Jiří Menzel (23 February 1938 - 5 September 2020) was a Czech film and theatre director, screenwriter and actor, one of the central figures of the Czech New Wave. His debut feature Closely Watched Trains (1966), adapted from Bohumil Hrabal, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968. The banned Larks on a String (1969) could only be released after the Velvet Revolution and won the Golden Bear at the 1990 Berlin Film Festival. His comedy My Sweet Little Village (1985), co-written with Zdeněk Svěrák, earned a second Oscar nomination.
At the Václav Havel Library in Prague on January 24, 2025, a memorial event "Tribute to Jiří Menzel" was held, at which the ambassadress of the Croatian Republic presented the director's wife Olga Menzelová with a state decoration awarded posthumously by President Zoran Milanović.
The artistic association Artes inducted Jiří Menzel posthumously into the Hall of Legends of Entertainment Art at a solemn ceremony on September 25, 2022, at the Lucie Bílá Theater in Prague.
The director's wife Olga Menzelová confirmed on November 9, 2020, that Jiří Menzel died as a result of pneumonia caused by covid-19.
Jiří Menzel died on September 5, 2020, in Prague at the age of 82 after a long illness; in recent years he suffered from the consequences of a 2017 brain operation.
