Painter Jan Smital (1896–1955)

An exhibition marking the 130th anniversary of Jan Smital's birth (1896–1955) presents this Loštice-born academic painter. Smital was born on 24 June 1896 in Loštice and died on 5 July 1955 in Olomouc. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Professor Vratislav Nechleba and devoted himself primarily to landscape painting and figurative and portrait compositions. He completed study trips along the Black Sea coast, to Algeria, and to Subcarpathian Ruthenia. He worked in Prague, in the Slovak town of Hluk, and after 1946 in Olomouc. The exhibition runs from 3 March to 27 June 2026 at the Adolf Kašpar Memorial in Loštice, which is part of the Regional Museum in Šumperk.
