Saving Private Ryan

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks invited audiences to the Normandy landings twenty-five years ago - and nothing more authentic, brutal, or shocking in this genre has perhaps ever been filmed. For Saving Private Ryan, however, that was just the beginning.

Spielberg's war spectacle follows a group of Allied soldiers tasked with finding a young soldier somewhere in liberated Europe, whose brothers have already fallen and who, as his mother's last son, is to return home. But the Germans have not yet given up - and so death awaits the heroes in every bombed-out town, on every seemingly empty field, and at an insignificant bridge where Allies and Germans fight to the last man. Captain Miller, meanwhile, begins to wonder whether the life of one soldier is worth risking his entire unit for.

Spielberg rightfully won an Oscar for directing, and the film won five in total. The screening will take place on the large screen of the Scala University Cinema in Brno.
