Charismatic director Esteban (Javier Bardem) is a legend built on the success of his films and a demonic reputation marked by professional and romantic scandals. After years away, he returns to his native Spain to shoot a new film in the desert of Fuerteventura.

The creative process is hampered by harsh conditions and Esteban's directorial approach, which no longer quite fits the times.
