Alfa Mist
Nu jazz is a broad category that sometimes accommodates uninspired projects. Alfa Mist is the opposite.
London-based producer, pianist and composer Alfa Mist stands among the most distinctive voices of contemporary British nu-jazz. His musical roots lie in hip hop, dark melancholic beats and a fascination with sampling - it was his desire to understand the harmonic structures of the tracks he sampled that eventually led him to the piano. From a producer, he evolved into an author-performer and visionary who found absolute creative freedom in jazz.
Although his compositions rest on hip-hop grooves, the driving force is pure jazz improvisation. Landmark recordings like his debut Antiphon (2017) and the critically acclaimed Variables (2023) are built on rich, cinematically melancholic harmonic progressions that echo modal jazz and the influence of Miles Davis's electric period and McCoy Tyner. Alfa Mist does not construct compositions as fixed loops, but as living organisms - he gathers top instrumentalists from the London scene around him and gives them substantial space on stage. Real music emerges from direct dialogue between musicians, from spontaneity and genuine interaction.
The concert takes place as part of the JazzFestBrno festival at Sono Music Club in Brno.
