I, Plisecka
Theatre at the Exhibition Grounds, Brno
An intimate theatrical production about the life of prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya - a symbol of 20th-century world ballet, synonymous with Swan Lake, Carmen, and Anna Karenina. In 2025, a century has passed since her birth.
The production weaves together theatre, expressive dance, and ballet, following Plisetskaya as an artist in her fifties who, during recovery from an injury, reflects on her life in conversation with two foreign journalists. The audience discovers her iconic stage roles - Carmen, Odette/Odile, Kitri, Anna Karenina, the Dying Swan, and Bolero - while also glimpsing the backstage and political workings of the Soviet Union at that time.
The production aims to illuminate the evolution and transformation of ballet art and its interpretation against the backdrop of historical events.
