Huni Kuin Art Workshop
Hrubá Skála Castle, Hrubá Skála
from 1000 Kč · ≈ 41 €
A creative workshop in the presence of artists from the Huni Kuin tribe, focused on the traditional visual language of Kene and the sacred songs of Huni Meka. Yaka and Shane are members of the MAHKU movement — a collective whose works are part of the collections of the Museum of Art in São Paulo (MASP), the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo (MAM), and the Fondation Cartier in Paris. In 2024, MAHKU created a monumental mural on the facade of the main pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale.
The programme runs from 16:00 to 21:00 and includes:
🌿 opening with a traditional prayer (Tamani), 🎨 sharing about the origins of the sacred Kene symbols, 🖌️ canvas painting under Yaka's guidance, 🎵 live singing of sacred Huni Meka songs (Shane), 🪘 a tour of the traditional art of the Huni Kuin tribe and original paintings by the MAHKU movement.
About the artists: Yaka Huni Kuin comes from the village of Chico Curumim in the Kaxinawa indigenous reserve on the Jordão River. In her work, she combines the tribe's cosmovision, traditional songs, and visions from rituals with Nixi Pae medicine; she works with the geometric patterns of Kene, traditional crafts, body painting, and music. She is a co-founder of the Kayatibu cultural centre and a member of the MAHKU movement. Shane Huni Kuin is a singer and painter from the same village — in the Czech Republic he has performed at festivals such as Colours of Ostrava and Inlakech. Tamani Huni Kuin is the chief of the village of Chico Curumim and Shane's mother, guardian of the culture and traditions of the Huni Kuin tribe.
Capacity is limited to 20 people, registration is required (it helps organisers prepare canvases and materials for each participant). Admission: 1,000 CZK. Organised by the Cura da Floresta project supporting indigenous cultures — www.curadafloresta.org / IG: curadafloresta_org
