No Ghosts in Strašnice - Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary — Kostel Neposkvrněného početí Panny Marie, Prague

The etymology of the district's name remains uncertain. Until the early 20th century, Strašnice was an agricultural area known for growing cabbage and other crops, with farmsteads dominating the landscape. From the early 1900s onwards, villas and then rows of family homes began to appear on subdivided plots. These houses today provide the oldest evidence of the district's character, as the original farmstead buildings vanished irretrievably in the second half of the 20th century.

Walking tour participants will first visit the modern Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, whose distinctive shape was designed by architect Jindřich Synek in 1992-1994. The tour then explores how the middle classes lived during the First Republic - examining the Masaryk Colony (the only joint project of Josef Gočár and Pavel Janák), the Freedom Colony by František Albert Libra, and the Locomotive Driver Colony by architects Václav Gail and Alois Šťastný, which exemplify the popularity of garden cities.
