The Czechoslovak National Bank - The First Independent Guardian of Czechoslovak Currency
Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes Brno, Brno
A lecture marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak National Bank will explore the circumstances of its establishment and the political and economic factors that led to the creation of an independent central bank in 1924-1926. The lecture will also cover the organization and operations of the Czechoslovak National Bank in the 1920s and 1930s, until the establishment of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia.
On the occasion of the anniversary, the Czech National Bank issued a limited edition of 200,000 five-thousand-crown banknotes on September 22, 2026, which drew long queues of interested visitors in both Prague and Brno.
The lecture is given by PhDr. Jakub Kunert, chief archivist of the Czech National Bank and deputy director of the Visitor Centre department.
