At first glance, the Burnham family appears happy: a comfortable house, a quality car, a charming teenage daughter at the right school, parents successful in their careers. Mrs. Burnham (Annette Bening) therefore wears a constant smile. But in reality, everything is different.

The image of perfection that mother Carolyn and daughter Jane maintain is constantly disrupted by father Lester (Kevin Spacey) – he is not the muscular, tanned "playboy" and increasingly openly shows his dissatisfaction with his life. As long as he merely refuses the role that hundreds like him dutifully play, it is difficult but bearable for the family.

Yet yesterday indecisive and downtrodden, Lester decides to address his midlife crisis in an unexpectedly radical way – he suddenly realizes what life is truly about.
