Satan in Goray
Divadlo Husa na provázku, Brno
A society frightened and divided by countless crises, old orders crumbling before our eyes, storm clouds gathering on the horizon. The approaching evil is an equal match for good, yet it has a far larger fan base. Under what circumstances is a person capable of believing in superstitions, delusions, lies? What does it take for someone to succumb to their own fear?
Nearly a hundred years after its first publication, Singer's apocalyptic vision cannot be read as a report on a closed chapter of humanity. Omnipresent fear sweeps the pavement for self-proclaimed messiahs offering easy solutions: "Laws are obsolete and we offer revision. No one will tell us what is right, we know best. And when things don't work out? Don't worry, you can always shift responsibility to others! Can one even resist the temptation to achieve instant redemption? Especially when it's available at the click of a button? And can you tell the difference between the devil and a saviour?"
The production grows from astonishment at the topicality of Singer's warning and from the need to speak about the present through the language of great stories. The adaptation of the novel was undertaken by Janusz Klimsza, who is simultaneously meeting with the Husa na provázku ensemble. A precise study of a crumbling order.
