Bohumír Čermák and His Work for Brno — House of Arts Brno, Brno

Architect and designer Bohumír František Antonín Čermák (1882-1961) was born into a mixed Czech-German family and studied in Vienna. In 1908, he opened his own architectural office in Brno and soon founded the Arts and Crafts Workshops, a company dedicated to comprehensive interior design solutions - from furniture and household furnishings to small artworks and toys.

Before World War I, Čermák was among the young creators who brought the ideas of Viennese modernism to Brno. His work drew inspiration from Otto Wagner's principles, which opposed simplicity and functionality to the excessive decoration of late historicism. Čermák's work is characterized by modernist purity of form complemented by subtle, often floral ornamentation.

The lecture will be presented by art historian Pavla Cenková. It is part of the cycle "Faces of Brno Architecture", organized by the House of Art of the City of Brno as part of the Brno Architectural Manual programme.
